All About LED Lighting

As I’m sure you already know, all ring lights and mirrors from Luvo Store are powered using LEDs. But why do we use this technology, what are its benefits, and why is it the best option for you?

Let’s start with the basics!

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and is a relatively new form of lighting technology. It’s not only more energy efficient than traditional incandescent lighting, it lasts longer, and offers comparable or better light quality. It is the perfect lighting source for cosmetic and makeup artists.

Now, let’s explore these claims a little bit more.

LED Lights have a MASSIVE lifespan:

LED bulbs have an average lifespan of 50,000 hours. So, if you used your mirror or ring light for 10 hours a day it would take nearly 14 years for the light to blow. That’s a lot of time to put on your lippie! Now compare this to the lifespan of a regular bulb, which is only 1000 to 2000 hours. I think we have a clear winner.

They’re Energy Efficient AF:

LEDs are directional- meaning that instead of lighting up a massive area and dispersing light where you don’t need it, they direct bright light toward a specific area. They also use waaay less heat, which makes them not only more energy efficient but safer too.

All of this means that you’re not only getting a quality product that offers superior lighting, but that you’re saving money too. What’s not to love?!

Okay, so this next part gets into a bit more of the nitty gritty stuff involved with LED lighting.

The charts at the end should answer any questions you may have about the specifics of your LUVO lighting. But first we should explain a few terms you may have heard of, as things can get a little confusing when it comes to the techy side of lighting.

So, when shopping for LEDs you have no doubt come across the terms, Lumens, Kelvins, and Watts. Let’s sort out what these terms mean and how important they are in figuring out what lighting is right for you.

What are Lumens?

Lumens is a measurement of light output, or the brightness of the bulb. The higher the Lumens, the brighter the light and vice versa. When shopping for LEDs, think Lumens not Watts (We’ll get into why below).

What are Kelvins?

Kelvin is a measurement that describes the colour temperature of light. LED lighting can achieve a range of temperature from warm, through neutral, to cool.

Cool lighting is often considered comparable with daylight, whereas warm is compared to the light from a cosy fireplace. Cooler light produces more crisp contrast, warm light is excellent for flattering skin tones.

The lower the Kelvin number the warmer the light, the higher the number the cooler the light. All of our products come with Kelvin control, either through our in-built control dials or with our clip-on interchangeable filters. This ensures you can transition between colour temperatures with ease. Perfect lighting for any situation, sorted!

What about Watts?

Ah, Watts. They used to be important when choosing a lightbulb but not anymore.

Watts are a measurement of power consumption. With the traditional lighting most of us are used to, the higher the watts equals the brighter the light. With LED lights, that rule does not apply. For example, a 9 Watt LED bulb can be brighter than a 12 Watt LED bulb from another manufacturer. This is because one brand may be more energy efficient than the other, so the 9 Watt bulb uses less power but has a brighter Lumens output. Confusing right!? As we mentioned above it can be easier to just pay attention to the Lumens when purchasing LED lighting. However if you’re faced with 2 different bulbs with the same Lumens but different Watts- pick the bulb with the lower Watt output as this bulb will be more energy efficient.

Phew! We’re done!
